Bendel CPST Services refer to an array of activities and interventions that are put in place to correct any deficits uncovered during an OLP evaluation. Generally, CPST activities aim to strengthen the coping capacity of a child/youth and the family/caregiver; and to regain stability in their everyday functionality after an episodic crisis.


CPST interventions are delivered in a one-on-one session/meeting with the child/youth, family/caregiver and sometimes involve other service providers (collateral), in convenient settings where the child engages in services and/or socializes.

Service Components:

Intensive Interventions (Counselling)
These services are aimed at regaining balance in the life of the child/youth, teaching them new coping skills and the ability to navigate safely in their community. The counselling can include a focus on problematic relationships between the client and their family, issues with school attendance, and/or issues of self-care and independent living.

Crisis Avoidance (Counseling)
These are a series of activities that are put in place to avert crises or to deal with them when they arise. A CSPT provider meets with the child/youth and the family in a location which guarantees maximum participation. The goal is to work with the family to identify and understand crisis triggers, and develop strategies to ward-off or reduce the intensity of the symptoms.

Intermediate Term Crisis Management (Counseling)
Following a crisis occurrence, such efforts help a child/youth/family to regain their balance and restore them to pre-crisis functioning in their homes, community and relationships; and present them with the opportunity to learn new ways of meeting and handling such crises.

Rehabilitative Psychoeducation
These services focus on participation, practice and role playing, rather than counseling. Such efforts 
are usually post-crisis and aim to help the child/youth/family identify environmental stressors and build strategies to lessen their effects or ward them off all together.


Strengths-Based Service Planning
These are efforts by service providers from the point of referral acceptance, through identifying the strengths and resilience of the child/youth/family, through examination of past coping strategies, to co-naming or co-identifying the presenting problems and developing a mutually agreed upon treatment plan that is unique to the family. 


Strength based service planning also requires providers to work with end users to periodically evaluate the service goals: celebrating achieved goals, setting new ones, and discarding non-realistic ones.

Rehabilitative Supports
These measures are put in place to shore up child/youth/family functionality and reduce the stress experienced during an episodic crisis. The goal here is to instill better coping skills and help the child/youth/family to be more proactive in managing their behavioral health contingencies and/or emotional disturbances.


Efforts here are restorative/rehabilitative centered and include getting a child/youth to understand the importance of ingesting his/her medication, understanding the side effects, and when to schedule refills.


Other efforts include training the child/youth/family in safety measures and evacuation procedures, basic hygiene, knowing what health professionals to contact, and other help-seeking behaviors.
